Belts & Grading

In capoeira, a batizado (grading) is when a new student is officially welcomed into the group as a serious practioner – a capoeirista – and given a special belt called a cordão. It’s a time of celebration, not a test. It’s the chance to take part in some really incredible capoeira rodas, meet visiting mestres, do special workshops, deepen your understanding of capoeira and really enjoy yourself!

Troca de Cordas

Literally the changing of the cords, cords signify the level of a capoeirista. During the troca de cordas some capoeiristas will receive a new cordao before or after a game played against a Mestre (Master) in which they have to show their advancement and earn the right to wear the new cordao. The color schemes for the levels vary from group to group.

The Cordão De Ouro grading system is like below.

Aluno        Aluno        Graduado        Monitor

Instrutor          Professor          Contra Mestre

Mestre 1st Degree        Mestre 2nd Degree        Mestre 3rd Degree        Mestre 4th Degree
